Carlo Ancelotti calls for an end to “unplayable” football on artificial pitches
Bayern Munich manager says “unplayable” surface at Viktoria Plzen was a “disaster”
Artificial pitches are becoming increasingly common in football, but Carlo Ancelotti is not a fan.
The Bayern Munich manager has called for an end to the use of artificial pitches in football, saying that they are “unplayable” and a “disaster”.
Ancelotti’s comments come after Bayern’s 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Tuesday. The match was played on an artificial pitch, and Ancelotti was critical of the surface after the game.
“The pitch was a disaster,” Ancelotti said. “It was unplayable. The ball was bouncing everywhere. It was difficult for both teams to play football.”
Ancelotti is not the only manager to have criticized artificial pitches.
In 2017, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said that artificial pitches were “not good for football” and that they “damage the players’ joints”.
And in 2018, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that artificial pitches were “a disgrace” and that they “should be banned”.
There are a number of reasons why managers are opposed to artificial pitches.
One reason is that the surface is often harder than natural grass, which can lead to injuries. Another reason is that the ball bounces differently on artificial pitches, which can make it difficult for players to control and pass the ball.
Artificial pitches are also more expensive to install and maintain than natural grass pitches. This can make them a less attractive option for clubs, especially those in lower divisions.
Despite the concerns of some managers, artificial pitches are becoming increasingly common in football. This is because they are more durable than natural grass pitches and can be used in all weather conditions.
However, if Ancelotti and other managers have their way, the use of artificial pitches in football will eventually come to an end.
