COLUMN: Think beyond politics, resist anger
By JASON SATTLER
June 16, 2023There is something I have been wrestling with a lot lately. Most of you who have been following my career know that I’m involved in politics and that I am a Democrat. However, I’m also a Christian. I think both of those things are important to understanding where I am coming from with this piece.
I’m not going to lie, folks, I am feeling pretty discouraged lately. I’m discouraged by the state of our country and the state of our politics. I see so much division and hatred. I see people on both sides of the aisle who are so quick to resort to name-calling and insults. I see people who are so quick to judge and condemn others. And I see people who are so quick to give up on hope.
It’s easy to get caught up in the anger and frustration. It’s easy to let the negativity consume us. But I believe that we have to resist that temptation. We have to choose hope over despair, unity over division.
I believe that we need to come together as a country. We need to find common ground and work together to solve the problems that we face. We need to be willing to listen to each other and to understand each other’s perspectives. And we need to be willing to compromise.
I know that this is not going to be easy. But I believe that it is possible. I believe that we can overcome the challenges that we face if we work together. And I believe that we can build a better future for our children.
So let us choose hope over despair, unity over division. Let us come together as a country and work together to solve the problems that we face. Let us build a better future for our children.
Here are some tips on how to resist anger and division:
- Take a break from social media. Social media can be a breeding ground for anger and division. If you find yourself getting sucked into the negativity, take a break.
- Spend time with people who make you happy. Surround yourself with people who love and support you.
- Focus on the positive. It’s easy to get caught up in the negative, but it’s important to remember the good things in your life.
- Practice gratitude. Take some time each day to think about the things you are grateful for.
- Seek professional help if needed. If you’re struggling to cope with anger and division, don’t hesitate to seek professional help.
I know that this is a difficult time, but I believe that we can get through it together. If we work together, we can overcome the challenges that we face and build a better future for our children.
