Early Life and Education

James Earl Carter Jr. was born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1946, where he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering. After graduating, Carter served four years as an officer in the United States Navy. After his military service, Carter returned to Georgia and earned a Master of Science degree in nuclear physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Political Career

Carter's political career began in 1962 when he was elected to the Georgia State Senate. He served as a state senator for six years and as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. In 1976, Carter was elected President of the United States, serving one term from 1977 to 1981. During his presidency, Carter created the Department of Energy, signed the Camp David Accords, and negotiated the release of American hostages in Iran.

Post-Presidency

After leaving office, Carter founded the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization that promotes democracy, human rights, and peace around the world. He has also been involved in several other humanitarian efforts, including Habitat for Humanity and the Global Health Council.
