Kretschmer Meets AfD Leader Urban: Details of the Conversation Remain Confidential
Dresden - Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has met with the federal chairman of the AfD, Tino Chrupalla, and the state chairman of the AfD in Saxony, Jörg Urban.
The meeting took place at the request of Urban and was primarily about the current situation in Saxony.
The talks lasted about an hour and a half and took place in a "constructive atmosphere," according to a statement from Kretschmer's office. The details of the conversation, however, will remain confidential. This is common practice in political meetings, as both sides want to create a space for open and honest dialogue.
It is not the first time that Kretschmer has met with representatives of the AfD. In the past, he has also met with the former AfD federal chairman Alexander Gauland. These meetings have always been controversial, as the AfD is considered a right-wing extremist party by many. However, Kretschmer has defended his decision to meet with AfD representatives, arguing that it is important to maintain a dialogue with all political forces in Saxony.
The AfD is the second-strongest party in the Saxon state parliament. In the last state election in 2019, the AfD received 27.5% of the votes. The CDU, on the other hand, received 32.1% of the votes. The AfD is also represented in the German Bundestag with 92 seats.
The meeting between Kretschmer and Urban comes at a time when the AfD is facing increasing pressure. The party is currently under observation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In addition, several AfD members have been accused of right-wing extremism and racism.
