Republican Carlos Gimenez Wins Reelection to U.S. House in Florida's 28th Congressional District
Carlos Gimenez, a Republican, has won reelection to the U.S. House in Florida's 28th Congressional District, defeating Democratic challenger Robert Asencio. Gimenez, a former Miami-Dade County mayor, was first elected to the House in 2020.
Asencio, a former state representative, conceded the race late Tuesday night. "I want to thank all of our supporters who worked so hard on this campaign," he said in a statement. "We came up short tonight, but I am proud of the race we ran."
Gimenez will now serve a second term in the House, where he is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
The 28th Congressional District includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. It is a swing district that has been represented by both Republicans and Democrats in recent years.
In 2020, Gimenez defeated Democratic incumbent Debbie Mucarsel-Powell by a margin of 53% to 47%. Asencio was the only Democrat to challenge Gimenez in the 2022 election.
Gimenez's victory is a boost for Republicans, who are hoping to gain control of the House in the 2022 midterm elections.
