2024 Saints Win First Regional Title in 35 Years
Saints Defeat Sault Ste. Marie 65-51 to Advance to Quarterfinals
The St. Ignace Saints boys basketball team made history on Tuesday night, winning their first regional title in 35 years.
The Saints defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils 65-51 in the Division 3 Region 15 championship game at Sault Ste. Marie High School.
St. Ignace was led by junior guard Tyler Schultz, who scored a game-high 22 points. Senior forward Cade Peterson added 16 points, and senior guard Ethan Angell chipped in 10 points.
"It's an amazing feeling," said St. Ignace coach Dorey Smith. "These kids have worked so hard all season, and they deserve this."
The Saints will now advance to the Division 3 quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the Region 16 championship game between Menominee and Gladstone.
The Saints' victory is a major accomplishment for the program. It is the first time the team has won a regional title since 1989.
The Saints have been one of the top teams in the Upper Peninsula all season. They finished the regular season with a record of 19-3, and they won the Straits Area Conference championship.
The Saints are now one win away from reaching the Breslin Center in East Lansing for the state semifinals.
