Tod Zingst, Northern State assistant football coach, has died following a cardiac event

Northern State Assistant Football Coach Tod Zingst, Who Collapsed During the Wolves’ Game Against Southwest Minnesota State on Sept. 23, Has Died

Tod Zingst, an assistant football coach at Northern State University, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, at a Sioux Falls hospital, the school announced.

Zingst, 61, collapsed on the field during the Wolves’ game against Southwest Minnesota State on Sept. 23. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and later transferred to Sioux Falls.

Zingst was a key figure in this Wolves football programs success

Zingst was in his second season as Northern State’s defensive line coach. He previously coached at the University of Mary, where he was the defensive coordinator for 13 seasons.

Zingst was a key figure in the success of the Wolves’ football program in recent years. In 2021, the Wolves won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

”Tod was a great coach and a great man,” said Northern State head football coach Mike Schmidt. “He will be deeply missed.”

Zingst is survived by his wife, Lori, and two children, Taylor and Tyler.
